Happy news for hoteliers this week; bad tidings for travelers. Stats are in for the first half of 2006, and rates continued their rise.
Smith Travel Research says the average daily rate at U.S. lodgings was $96.56, up 6.8% from the first six months of 2005. Average occupancy was up 2.1%, to 63.5%. The luxury segment had the largest rate increases: from $249.28 to $271.68.
Though harder to find, deals still are out there.
Expedia.com has rooms at Vegas' Sahara from $46 and doubles at the Pickwick Arms Hotel in ultra-expensive Manhattan for $129.
Priceline.com's Brian Ek says customers at the name-your-price site are getting $100 nights at three-star Boston hotels where rates average $200. He's seeing winning bids of $125 for San Francisco four-stars with average rates of $183.
